Best Features of the Goal Zero Yeti 1400 Lithium Portable Power Station

Powerful and Safe Energy Supply

Goal Zero Yeti Solar Generator

The Yeti 1400 provides 1500W of continuous pure sine wave output. This ensures that your appliances and electronic devices are well protected.

In addition to the 1500W continuous output, the Yeti solar generator has a surge capacity of 3000W, which is double that of most gas generators.

This means the Yeti 1400 can power higher wattage appliances including coffee makers, fridges, televisions and medical devices.

The lithium battery pack has an energy capacity of 1,425 watt-hours. This is plenty enough juice to charge multiple devices and power several appliances before you need a recharge.

According to the company’s estimates, on a single charge this generator can recharge a 4 wh self-powered LED lamp 200 times, a smartphone 70 times and a laptop 24 times.

This makes it handy to have around as a portable power station for campsites and outdoor gatherings and as a reliable backup for larger homes.

You can power your whole camping setup with it, power your work devices during fieldwork, keep your fridge running during a power outage and so much more.

If you are looking for a compact and portable power station that will cover most of your power needs, this is one of the best.

Battery Management

For a battery this powerful, the engineers had to make sure that it did not ruin people’s electronics or cause fire hazards.

The battery consists of 18,650 lithium cells connected to form a single high-capacity lithium pack.

The pack is then surrounded by a water-proof enclosure to protect the battery from the elements especially when you are outdoors. A cooling system ensures the battery remains cool in all situations, even when working at maximum capacity.

But the most important component is the battery management system made by Texas Instruments. It monitors the battery to prevent over-charging, excessive current flow and short-circuiting.

For instance, if you connect the generator to a large appliance that draws too much power, the battery management system will automatically shut down the power supply.

Versatile Output

You can charge or power your devices and appliances in three different ways.

There are two 120V AC outputs with a continuous flow capacity of 1500W and surge capacity of 3000W. These are ideal for common home appliances such as a fridge, TV or coffee maker.

There are also four 2.4A USB ports for smaller devices such as tablets and smartphones.

You’ll also find a 12V cigarette lighter socket found in cars.

There are a couple of other ways you can draw power from the batteries such as wiring directly to the BNC connectors. But the three above are the simplest and most convenient ways to power your devices. They should be enough for most, if not all, of your needs.

Two Recharging Options

The battery life depends on your usage. If you are using it to power a fridge, expect it to last for around 24 hours.

If you are just using it to power your laptop, smartphone and maybe a lamp, then it can last several days.

When the battery runs out, there are two recharging options. You can plug it into a standard wall socket using the provided AC cable. It takes approximately 25 hours to get to full charge.

Or you can charge it using solar panels either from Goal Zero or a third party brand (requires a separate adaptor).

The solar option takes about 6 hours to recharge the battery  via solar panels, depending on weather conditions. In perfect weather, it can take as little as 4.5 hours to recharge fully.

Compact and Portable

Best Goal Zero Yeti 1400

For a unit that can power almost any home appliance and device, it is surprising how compact it is.

However, you should note that it is not a light generator that you can carry around by hand. It weighs 45 lbs.

But you can easily put it in your car trunk, boat or RV and hit the road (or water). Whether you are going camping or in a remote area, the Yeti solar generator travels with you easily.

Limitations of the Goal Zero Yeti 1400 Portable Power Station

It’s Expensive

Goal Zero Yeti 1400

If you want the Yeti lithium generator, get read to part with almost $2,000.

Looking at the power, weight and capacity of this generator, the price tag is actually pretty good. It’s just that is much higher than most portable generators.

This is mostly due to the cost of the lithium battery pack used in the generator.

If you want something cheaper at this power level, see our reviews of the best home solar generators. There are plenty of other lower-cost options though they don’t provide the same amount of power or versatility as the Yeti 1400 – and they can weigh over 100 lbs.

Conclusion

The Yeti 1400 is not for everyone. If you are just looking for a backup to power your Kindle, smartphone and laptop in case of an outage or when you are outdoors, cheaper generators will do.

But if you need as much power as you can get without resorting to a dedicated home power station, this is the best deal you are going to get.

The best part about the Yeti 1400 is its versatility. Yes, it’s most appealing to campers, off-grid living enthusiasts and those doing extended fieldwork. But it is still a handy unit to have around the house. It will prove indispensable during extended outages, especially with the solar charging option.

You can keep all essential tools, appliances, and devices running with the Yeti 1400, making it an affordable home backup solution.
