Who Is Lion Energy?

Lion Energy is an American company that manufactures and sells various solar energy products. Their product range runs the gamut from small power banks to portable solar generators to massive home solar power and energy storage systems.

In this post, I discuss who Lion Energy is, their history and mission, their products, and whether it's a reliable brand.

Who Is Lion Energy?

They may not be as well known as other solar generator brands like Jackery, Goal Zero and EcoFlow, but Lion Energy is one of the big companies in solar. Their revenue for 2021 was over $100 million.

Lion Energy was founded in 2012 with the aim of providing safe renewable energy to their customers. They are currently based in Utah.

One of the unique things about Lion Energy is that they only use lithium phosphate batteries in almost all their solar products, including solar generators.

The company cites the safety, reliability and longevity of lithium phosphate technology. They’ve even partnered with American Battery Factory to start manufacturing LiFePO4 batteries in the USA.

Where Does Lion Energy Manufacture Their Products?

Lion Energy is making efforts to bring the production of raw materials and manufacturing of consumer products to the US. Their partnership with the American Battery Factory is a step towards this goal.

But as of now, they manufacture their products in China.

Here’s a quick overview of the different Lion Energy solar products.

Lion Power Banks

Lion Energy sells three power banks: the Lion Eclipse, the Lion Prowler, and the Lion Cub JC.

The Lion Eclipse is a 27,000 mAh (99.9Wh) lithium NCA power bank with 2W/8W/10W wireless charging, two USB-A ports, and one 65W/85W USB-C PD port.

The Lion Prowler is the cheapest of the three power banks. It has a capacity of 20,000mAh or 74Wh. It features a 10W wireless charger, a pair of USB-A ports, and a 15W USB-C port.

The Lion Cub JC is an all in one power bank, car jump-starter, air compressor and flashlight. It has a 14,000mAh capacity and is the only one of the three power banks to have a lithium iron phosphate battery.

You can also get a power bank kit that includes a 50W foldable solar panel and LED lights.

Lion Solar Generators

If you need something bigger to run appliances, Lion Energy has three solar generators to pick from — all with LiFePO4 batteries.

The Lion Safari ME is their largest solar generator. It packs a 922Wh LiFePO4 battery and has an output of 2000W. It’s a great pick if you want a solar generator that can run small appliances and keep your devices charged.

The Safari ME can be expanded to almost 3000Wh using the 2048Wh Safari ME Expansion Kit.

The Lion Safari LT is smaller at 450Wh capacity and 500W output. Weighing just 11 pounds, it’s perfect for camping and other outdoor adventures. It can power small appliances like a car fridge, CPAP and electric blanket.

The Lion Trek is even smaller with a capacity of 99.9Wh and an AC output of 150W. At just 2.1lbs, it’s lightweight enough for hiking, fishing trips, and travel (you can take it on an airplane).

Lion Energy Solar Panels

Lion Energy sells four portable solar panels to go with their power banks and solar generators.

There’s a small 50W foldable panel and an even smaller 20W solar panel that can recharge any of the Lion power banks or the Lion Trek power station.

For their larger solar generators, Lion sells a 12V and a 24V 100W solar panel.

Lion Energy Batteries

If you are putting together a solar kit or installing a solar power system, Lion Energy also sells lithium iron phosphate batteries

You can use these batteries in your home, shed, boat, RV, trailer or camper van.

The 12V 20Ah Lion Safari UT 250 is the smallest battery with a capacity of 256Wh. The 12V 56Ah Lion Safari UT 700 packs a capacity of 716Wh.

The largest battery is the 12V 105Ah Lion Safari UT 1300 with a capacity of 1,344Wh.

In addition to solar panels and batteries, Lion Energy also sells various accessories to complete your setup. These include an inverter, battery charger, and charge controller.

Energy Storage Systems

The last category of Lion Energy products includes residential and commercial energy storage systems.

Lion Energy can design and set up a battery bank for your home or business to provide backup power in emergencies or reduce your reliance on the grid.

Lion Energy only uses lithium iron phosphate batteries for their energy storage systems to ensure they are safe, reliable, and long-lasting.

Is Lion Energy A Good Brand?

Lion Energy is a good brand. They’ve been around for a long time and their products are generally highly rated by customers.

We particularly love the build quality of their power banks and solar generators. They are rugged and are designed to last.

The decision to use LiFePO4 batteries in their solar generators means they will last for years with no maintenance required. Surprisingly, the Lion solar generators are lighter than similar sized LiFePO4 solar generators.

The only qualm I have about many of Lion Energy products, including their solar generators, is the price tag. They cost more than most similar products from other brands.

Their flagship Lion Safari ME solar generator, for instance, costs over $2,000 but has a limited capacity of 922Wh.

Solar generators like the Bluetti AC200MAX cost less yet they have a LiFePO4 battery, 2kWh+ capacity and an output of over 2000W.

Another area where competition beats Lion Energy is expandability. You can expand the Safari ME to 3000Wh using an expansion kit. But Bluetti, EcoFlow, Inergy and Renogy solar generators can be expanded further than this.

For example, the Inergy Flex 1500 accepts up to 96 additional batteries for a max capacity of about 96,000Wh.

The Lion 100W solar panels are also more expensive than similar wattage foldable solar panels from Renogy, Eco-Worthy and Rockpals.

Lion Energy power banks are also not cheap.

Overall, if you are shopping for high quality, reliable and long lasting solar products, Lion Energy is a great brand.

But if you are looking for a good bargain on a solar generator, power bank or solar panel, I’d recommend shopping around for alternatives.

Lion Energy vs. Point Zero Energy

If you are shopping for a customizable solar generator kit, I recommend Point Zero Energy over Lion Energy.

Point Zero Energy is an American company founded in 2013 by David Willis. The company sells a range of home backup and off-grid solar kits based on the Titan solar generator

The best thing about the Point Zero Energy is how customizable their kits are. You can just get their base Titan solar generator with a 2000Wh Li-ion battery and a 3000W inverter, or select a kit with extra batteries and solar panels.

The Titan solar generator allows unlimited expansion, so you can add as many batteries as you need to cover your power needs.

Point Zero Energy has two main downsides.

One, they use lithium-ion batteries that don't last as long as LiFePO4 batteries. Secondly, their products are also pricier than what many other brands charge.

Lion Energy vs. Inergy

Inergy is another brand that offers a highly customizable solar generator - the Inergy Flex 1500

The Flex 1500 has a 1000Wh Li-ion battery and an output of 1500W. You can expand capacity to 96kWh by adding up to 96 Flex batteries.

Inergy also sells the Kodiak LT (350Wh, 350W) and Kodiak X2 (1280Wh, 1200W) power stations, though these are not expandable.

Generally, I feel that Inergy’s power stations are more reasonably priced compared to Lion Energy. The Kodiak X2 has more capacity than the Safari ME and uses the same longlasting LiFePO4 battery technology.

But it costs about $1000 less. And if the Kodiak X2’s 1200W output is not enough, you can buy two of them (at almost the same price as one Safari ME) to double output to 2400W and capacity to 2560Wh.

So if you are looking for a cheaper alternative to the Lion Energy solar generator, I recommend Inergy.

Final Thoughts

Lion Energy is a great brand. They make high quality, reliable and long-lasting solar generators. Their products are a bit pricey, so it may not be the best brand if you are shopping on a budget.

But if you want a solar generator, battery or solar panel that will last a long time, then Lion Energy is a good pick.
