ToughTested 16,000mAh Solar Power Bank: Field Test & Review

The ToughTested 16000mAh solar power bank is a great choice if you are looking for a way to keep your gadgets charged when outdoors or in case of an emergency.

It holds enough power to charge a standard smartphone 5-6 times.

When the battery dies, it has a handy solar panel that can fully charge the battery in half a day as long as there’s strong sunlight.

The solar charging option combined with the LED lights and the IP67 rating make this power bank great for all kinds of outdoor activities including hiking, camping and fieldwork.

Field Test & Review

1. High Capacity Battery

The 16,000mAh battery can charge your phone 5 to 6 times over depending on your phone’s battery capacity.

This is helpful when you are going outdoors or when there’s an emergency. You can keep your phone charged up for days on a single charge of the power bank.

2. Fast Dual Charging

The power bank has two USB ports. The power bank will detect when two devices are connected and deliver the right amount of power to each.

The ports don’t have fast charging technology but they still charge fairly quickly even when you’ve connected two smartphones.

3. Integrated Solar Panel

When the battery dies down, just leave the power bank in the sun and it recharges completely in around 5-6 hours.

Unfortunately, there’s no other way to charge the power bank. You can’t plug it into a wall outlet or even charge it via USB from your laptop.

If the weather is cloudy, you’ll not be able to keep the power bank fully charged.

4. IP67 Rating

The IP67 rating means the power bank is dust proof and waterproof. The manufacturer also says it’s shockproof.

So a fall in the snow or an accidental dunk in a pond shouldn’t cause any issues.

This makes it great for camping, hiking and other outdoor activities.

Subpar Build Quality

Despite being IP67 rated, it seems the ToughTested power bank is not quite as robust as the manufacturer claims.

The problem is the battery which has a tendency to swell and crack, making the power bank as potential safety hazard.

We are not sure whether this is an isolated issue with a few units.

Luckily, the manufacturer provides a 5 year warranty. So if you notice a problem, contact customer support for a replacement.

Field Test & Review

Apart from the battery quality issues, which might be isolated problems, the ToughTested 16,000mAh power bank is one of the best all round smartphone power backups for emergencies, fieldwork and outdoor adventures.

Beyond your smartphone, you can also charge other gadgets like a smartwatch, drone, camera…essentially anything that can be charged via USB.
